It’s one of the most common questions at the garage: when should you change your oil? There isn’t a single answer — it depends on several factors. Here’s what you need to know so you neither fall short nor overspend.
The general rule
With today’s oils and engines, most manufacturers set the change between 15,000 and 30,000 km, or once a year, whichever comes first. Older engines or those running on mineral oil usually need it sooner, at around 5,000–10,000 km.
Why does time matter too?
Even if you drive very little, oil ages: it loses its properties through oxidation and moisture. That’s why, even if you don’t reach the mileage, you should renew it at least once a year.
Factors that shorten the interval
- City driving: short trips and frequent cold starts are demanding on the oil.
- Towing and heavy loads: the engine works harder.
- Heat and dust: common in summer and in certain areas of Mallorca.
- Sporty driving: more revs, more wear.
What if I put it off?
Worn-out oil lubricates poorly, leaves deposits and speeds up the wear of internal parts. In the long run, skipping an oil change can cost you a far more expensive engine repair.
The most reliable way to know is to check your vehicle’s service book: it lists the exact interval set by the manufacturer.
